Get creative with us for a day and learn all there is to know about sand casting.
We currently have 8 full day workshops scheduled for the 'GEMFEST' time period. If you would like to book a workshop outside of this period, please contact us. BOOK NOW
Sand casting is one of the oldest techniques in the history of metalworking. It involves creating an impression in a sand mold and pouring molten metal into the mold to fill the cavity. This method was used by various ancient civilizations, including the Egyptians, Aztecs, and Incas to create intricate metal objects.
This is where it all begins. Use wax to carve out your design and create a 'master' which will be the piece that holds the backbone of your design. Wax is often used though natural objects can also be experimented with e.g. seashells.
The mold is two halves that come together. Sand is firstly packed tight into one half of the flask and then smoothed before the master is pressed down into the sand, leaving behind the impression of the desired piece.
The chosen metal is brough up to melting point and then carefully poured straight into the funnel of the mold, casting the metal in the void.
The two halves of the flask are pulled apart to (hopefully) reveal your desired result. Fails are not uncommon here, that's why practice is perfect. Resetting of the flask takes roughly 10 min and you will be ready to pour again.
The cleaning up process involves, filing, sanding, and often retexturing using either a hammer or other texturing tools to remove any unwanted inconsistencies from the casting process.
The last stage of the process is determining the level of polish desired for your piece. This is done with the jewellers hand piece and polishing wheels charged with cutting and polishing compounds. This work can also be carried out by hand.
Sand casting allows you to play around with endless opportunities for textures. Whether you use a piece of natural material (like a seashell) to cast or use techniques of scratching away at the sand to create texture, you never know what amazing result you're going to get.
We would love to share our knowledge with you. All tools and equipment provided, and we will have the sand casting kits available to purchase after the workshop is complete as well. See our scheduled workshops available during the month of GEMFEST.
